Bartrams Gardens

Me and Amanda shot a wedding at Bartrams Gardens on Saturday. As we were scouting for locations, I shot this image of Amanda. I’m also teaching basic photo lessons, and am at the point where I’m describing different qualities of light. As I was looking up photos of sunsets and silhouettes, I forgot how much I like those images. I think I try to hard to always have a “technically correct” image, in terms of tonality, but I realize that it’s not always necessary to make a beautiful image. I’m also not saying that I find this image to be particularly striking, but it is a quality of light that I don’t take into account very often.

Porchfront Factorye

Some of my friends are in a band called Porchfront Factorye [link], and they’ve been on tour for some time now. I was able to see them play twice while I was away in Minneapolis, and it was wondrous! I highly suggest you check them out.

Typically I blog about my own photos, but in this post, I’d really like to highlight a photographer whose work I’ve grown to love. Jeff Brouws; [link]. I’ve never met the man, but maybe someday I’ll try to. I just recently re-discovered his work (a long time ago I saw a book by him, but paid it little regard), and was shocked to see how much his landscapes and scenery photographs are exactly what I want mine to look like.

Gulu Walk 2007

Gulu Walk 2007 occurred in Philadephia this past weekend [link]. Although I did not personally photograph it, I am passionate about it’s cause and and choosing this time to promote it. Gulu Walk is a walk for peace for the civil war occuring in Uganda right now.

Quoted from the website: “U.N. Under-Secretary General of Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland called the situation in northern Uganda “the world’s most neglected humanitarian crisis” and “one of the biggest scandals of our generation.”

For the last 21 years, the people of northern Uganda have been caught in a brutal war between the Government of Uganda and the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). The LRA have terrorized the local population as a means to challenge the government and sustain itself. The LRA has abducted over 30,000 children to be used as soldiers and sex slaves. Tens of thousands have been wounded, maimed and killed in LRA attacks.”

A good friend of mine, Brian Shingledecker, led this year’s Gulu Walk in Philadelphia, and I am very proud of him, and all those involved in the event.

Fire in Kensington

Completley unrelated to photography or my work, I would like to take this time to post about a fire which spread across my neighborhood two nights ago. A 7-alarm fire consumed an abandoned warehouse in our Kensington neighborhood in Philadelphia [AP news article]. At least eight other houses in the vicinity of the warehouse were destoryed, leaving many families homeless. Over 100 people were evacuated from their homes, and 400 families were without power for some time.

One of these houses was The Simple Way Community Center at 3200 Potter Street. This was home to a community arts center, an after-school program, Cottage Printwork’s t-shirt micro-business, and also a living space for two aquaintences of mine.

The loss is great for these families and friends. Myself, and others within our community are coming together to help in any way possible with the relief and rebuilding on these properties.
